L110: Alphabet Roll: Matching
The Alphabet Roll is a playful, hands-on way for children to enjoy their first meaningful interaction with the letters of the Moveable Alphabet. This material introduces the graphic symbols of the alphabet by inviting children match letter shapes from the Moveable Alphabet to the corresponding symbols on an alphabet roll. This process is not about reading, but about matching the visual forms of letters and building a strong foundation for later literacy.
You can use this material with your own Moveable Alphabet or with the printable Moveable Alphabet provided in this pack. Both print and cursive versions are included, giving you the flexibility to match your child’s needs!
As children match the letters, they are refining visual discrimination, noticing subtle differences in shape, and strengthening their ability to focus on graphic details - skills that lay the groundwork for confident reading and writing in the future.
What’s Included
Printable Alphabet Roll Mat
For letter matching (both print and cursive)
Printable Moveable Alphabet (both print and cursive)
Two types of worksheets to extend visual letter matching
Clear Montessori-aligned presentation notes for introducing and extending the activity
How This Activity Supports Language
Builds visual letter recognition and discrimination
Encourages focused attention and matching
Lays the groundwork for future reading and writing
Offers a gentle, non-phonetic introduction to the alphabet
Using the worksheets
To extend the experience, two types of worksheets are included. The first invites your child to connect matching letters by drawing a line from one to the other, supporting both visual matching and gentle pencil grip. For repeated use, you can laminate these pages and let your child trace with a whiteboard marker, then wipe them clean for next time.
The second worksheet offers an extra layer of challenge and creativity. Here, your child chooses a colour for each letter, colours the top letter, then searches for all the matching letters in the grid below and marks them with the same colour. Each grid includes four of each letter to find, and like with the first type of worksheet, the pages can be laminated for reuse. This activity is all about matching visual forms, not reading or phonetic work.
