L111: Patterning
Patterning activities invite children to notice, sort, and arrange images in sequence, helping them see connections and understand how details fit together. More than just recognising patterns, this activity gently builds on whole-to-part relationships, showing how smaller pieces make up a complete design.
Practising patterns is a powerful way to prepare for early literacy. By arranging cards from left to right, children build skills for reading and writing, reinforcing the order of letters and words. This playful work supports observation, logical thinking, and focus - foundations for language and beyond.
This patterning pack includes a long strip as a visual guide and small individual cards with illustrated objects, animals, shapes, and colours. Children can copy the pattern, mix and match, or invent their own designs. Perfect for sparking creativity, turn-taking, and collaborative work!

Encourages hands-on exploration through practical life extensions (using dot strips for bead threading)
Prepares children for future literacy and numeracy
Using the worksheets
As an extension to the pattern cards, two worksheet types are included. The first worksheet invites your child to observe a simple colour sequence and then choose and colour in the next colour to complete the pattern. For reusability, simply laminate the page and use whiteboard pens. The second worksheet gently steps up the challenge: children are shown a short sequence and asked to select which image comes next from two options, circling the correct answer. Both worksheets are designed to support logical thinking, visual memory, and growing pattern awareness.
You can also extend the activity into practical life by combining the patterns with bead threading, encouraging your child to recreate the sequences with real objects, adding a hands-on, tactile dimension to their learning.
